Bolsonaro detained after being considered a flight risk

Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's determination was the potential of the former president's transfer to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President Donald Trump, leading him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were detained.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
