RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts down to the facility... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British personnel on duty over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces carried out what it called a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
