Shifting from Praise to Rage: Conservative Response to Epstein File Disclosure is Mixed.

Right-leaning responses to the limited disclosure of documents related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.

Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole

Justice Department officials defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the censorship process.

Questions Prompted by Redactions

While the former president's name and image appear in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt serious concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans immediately called for increased openness.

“The public are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this document release grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.

A Faction of Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure

But, some conservative pundits and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration.

The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces obscured.

Yet some do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed some conservative figures to launch the offensive.

“It’s pretty rich how the political left wrongly accused President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.

“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”

Clinton Spokesperson Releases Response

Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these files for months only to dump them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.

“The release is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.

Broader Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued

Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was relatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that preceded the legislative vote to pass a bill mandating the files' publication.

Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were provided hard-copy binders of files that included no previously unseen data.
